Congratulations to our Year 7 student Aran Mangat for reading the most words this year on Accelerated Reader. Aran read an incredible 3.8 million words in 85 books over the last four months, and was awarded an iPad mini by Head of Year 7 Andrew Reilly in an end of term assembly earlier today.
Accelerated Reader is a system used at Grace Academy Darlaston to help students boost their reading abilities. Once a student has finished reading a book in their reading age range, they can take a quiz on the book online. If they answer the questions on the quiz correctly, the number of words in the book is added to their ongoing word count.
Last year we had ten Accelerated Reader millionaire students, and this year we’ve already had two students pass the million-word milestone, with many more to come. Starting in January we hope to award even more students for reading through a new Golden Ticket scheme that we’re starting with Year 7 and 8.
Upon receiving his prize, we asked Aran a few questions about his favourite books.
GAD: What’s the best book you’ve read recently and why?
Aran: The best book I’ve read recently is Divergent (Veronica Roth). I liked it because even though it’s set in the future, it’s still really relatable. It’s a good adventure, and I really like adventure stories.
GAD: What’s your favourite book of all time?
Aran: I really like The Book Thief (Markus Zusak). It’s a combination of history and adventure set in Germany during World War II.
