Safeguarding

At Grace Academy Darlaston, we are committed to providing a safe and nurturing learning environment where everyone feels welcome, protected, and supported. Our dedicated safeguarding team works tirelessly to protect young people from harm and promote their wellbeing. We ensure that safeguarding is an integral part of everything we do, threading it throughout all aspects of academy life.

According to Keeping Children Safe In Education 2025 states that Safeguarding is defined as:-

  • Providing help and supporting to meet the needs of children as soon as problems emerge
  • Protecting children from maltreatment, whether that is within or outside the home, including online
  • Preventing impairment of children’s mental and physical health or development
  • Making sure children receive safe and effective care as they grow up
  • Taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes

Our policy applies to all staff, governors and volunteers working in the Academy. The Academy believes that students have a right to learn in a supportive, caring and safe environment which includes the right to protection from all types of abuse. In particular, teaching and pastoral staff are vigilant for signs of any student in distress and are confident about applying the processes to avert and alleviate any such problems.

The Academy recognises that, because Academy staff are in regular and frequent contact with children, they are particularly well placed to safeguard and promote the welfare of students and are therefore trained accordingly in safeguarding at least annually with regular topical training throughout the year.

Grace Academy Darlaston staff are fully committed to their responsibilities to safeguarding children and young people through robust recording and reporting procedures and the availability of supportive provisions and interventions. We use CPOMS to keep our record secure and in line with our procedures to maintain excellent record-keeping in a timely and confidential manner.

.Safeguarding is a collective responsibility, and every staff member receives comprehensive training. However, our dedicated safeguarding team, trained to an advanced level, is equipped to respond to all concerns. The team consists of staff from various key areas—including leadership, special educational needs (SEND), attendance, behavior, interventions, and mentoring. This ensures a coordinated approach to promoting the wellbeing and positive outcomes for every individual at Grace Academy Darlaston. The team meets regularly to review current practices and receives regular training from internal and external providers. This knowledge is then shared with the wider academy, our governors, and other key stakeholders.

At Grace Academy Darlaston, we believe that empowering students with knowledge is the best way to keep them safe. That's why our RSHE / PSHE curriculum is carefully planned to teach students how to keep safe and where to go for help, covering key topics like consent and positive community behaviour. We go beyond the classroom by partnering with a range of expert organisations to lead engaging assemblies, performances, and workshops. These sessions cover topics such as knife crime, mental health, and smoking cessation ensuring that our students learn about crucial safety issues in a dynamic and memorable way. We ensure these experiences are both impactful and supportive, providing prior warning and assistance for any student who may be negatively affected and offer follow-up sessions to make sure everyone feels confident in their understanding.

Grace Academy’s policies and procedures are underpinned by key statutory guidance and reviewed regularly. Some of those key guidance include:

  • Keeping Children Safe in Education
  • Working Together to Safeguard Children
  • Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment between Children in Schools and Colleges
